“There was a lot of talk about how the internet was the last great frontier for human progress,” she said.
“There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s hard to imagine how much more progress there would be if we were to embrace the web as the place we wanted to be.”
The idea of opening a website as a way to create social media for other people was born, she said, as a “thought experiment”.
The company has since expanded to include social media and mobile apps.
A Facebook page for the museum will also be launched later this year, with the museum saying it is a way of “creating a shared, human experience”.
“It’s not a platform for sharing, it’s not an aggregator for sharing,” Ms Stokes said.
The new museum will be called Galleria Mall, and it will be located at the Galleria in Sydney’s CBD, and run as a standalone museum.
Ms Stokes is a longtime supporter of Galleria and said she had been impressed by the project since its inception.
“We’ve had lots of positive feedback from people who have visited and liked the museum,” she explained.
“I think it’s going to be a great addition to Sydney’s community and people who will come along for the ride.”
Ms Chua said the museum would also be a showcase for the cultural life of the city.
Her aim was to create a “cultural hub” that would encourage people to explore Sydney through art, and to showcase some of the most exciting art exhibitions in the country.
She also wanted the museum to have a positive impact on the lives of people who were currently experiencing homelessness.
While the Galleries Mall is not open to the public, the museum’s Facebook page will include information about the exhibit and events planned in the coming weeks.
Anyone interested in participating in the event is urged to contact the Gallerie Mall’s organisers via their Facebook page.
